The beach of Dafnila is located on the eastern side of Middle Corfu and is adjacent to the beaches of Ipsos and Dassia. The area is 8 km from Corfu town and has relatively easy access to public transport. The name ‘Dafnila’ generates from the laurel plant and it literally translates to ”area with many laurels”. Naturally, it was chosen as in the past the plant was found in abundance there.
A Unique Example of Corfiot Nature
Unlike the bustling beaches of Dassia and Ipsos, the beach of Dafnila offers more quiet and relaxation combined with various water activities. The options vary from classic jet skiing to the latest flyboard and inflatable rides.
In the turquoise waters of Dafnila Beach, visitors can discover some of the marine flora and fauna of Corfu Island. Numerous are the different species of fish that inhabit the seabed.
Apart from the beach, the wider area of Dafnila could be described as a good example of Corfu’s coastal nature. A short walk could help you discover some of the secrets of Corfiot nature. The idyllic scenery is enriched by trees such as eucalyptus, aria, cypress, pine, holly and the ubiquitous olive trees. If you are a little lucky, you might observe some of the examples of the island’s fauna, perhaps one of the many species of birds.
Activities and contradictions
In absolute contrast to the tranquility and serenity of nature come the bustling settlements of Ipsos and Dassia and the activities they offer. Throughout the day, visitors to Dafnila can choose from a variety of activities, ranging from tennis and hiking to horseback riding, within walking distance.
Of course, the possibilities could not be limited to just during the day. The night offers unique experiences and discoveries. The local restaurants and taverns invite the visitor to get to know the culture and tradition of Corfu better, while the crowded bars offer fun and frolic until dawn.
Venetian History
Like most areas, the area of Dafnila has played an important role in the history of Corfu in the past. The reason for this is the Ottoman siege of Venetian-occupied Corfu in 1716. Because of its reduced visibility from the town, Dafnila was chosen in combination with Dassia and Ipsos Beach by the Ottomans for the landing on the 8th of July 1716. This was followed by looting of the outskirts of the city and the bloody siege of the same name, from which the Venetians and consequently the rest of Europe would emerge victorious.
